How to Choose a Blood Sugar Supplement: A Buyer's Checklist, Applied to GlucoZen
Pick a product that prints each ingredient's dose, uses amounts close to what research tested, and says the same thing on the label as in its ads. Walk away from disease claims: FDA has warned 15 companies over illegally sold diabetes treatments (FDA: Illegally sold diabetes treatments). GlucoZen passes some checks and fails others, as scored below.

The short version
What should you look for in a blood sugar supplement?
Look for printed doses, research-level amounts, a label that matches the ads, and no disease claims. Then ask your doctor before you buy, since no supplement replaces care.
- Doses on the label. Each active ingredient should show its own amount.
- Amounts that match research. Compare each dose with what trials actually tested.
- One story. The bottle, the website and the ads should list the same formula.
- No disease claims. Supplements may not claim to treat or prevent diabetes.
- Real reviews. Testimonials should be verifiable, not borrowed or invented.
Keep in mind the ADA does not recommend supplements for blood sugar benefit at all (ADA Standards of Care 2026, Sec. 5). A careful choice limits risk; it does not create proof.
Check 1
Are proprietary blends a red flag?
Not by themselves, but they hide the information you most need. FDA rules let a blend show only its total weight and list ingredients from heaviest to lightest, without single amounts (FDA Labeling Guide Ch. IV: proprietary blends).
| Question you can answer | Fully disclosed label | Proprietary blend |
|---|---|---|
| How much of each ingredient? | Yes, printed per serving | No, only the blend total |
| Does a dose match research? | Yes, compare directly | Only a best-case ceiling |
| Which ingredient is heaviest? | Yes | Yes, the first one listed |
| Can a doctor judge interactions by dose? | Easier | Harder |
GlucoZen uses a blend: 200 mg of 22 ingredients per 1 mL. Only chromium, listed outside the blend, has its own printed amount.
Check 1, worked out
How much of each ingredient can a 200 mg blend hold?
About 9 mg each on average, since 200 mg split 22 ways is roughly 9. Label order sets a ceiling: the k-th ingredient can weigh at most 200 divided by k.
- 200 mg
The whole proprietary blend in 1 mL. The label lists 22 ingredients, heaviest first, with no single amounts (FDA Labeling Guide Ch. IV: proprietary blends).
- about 9 mg
The average share if all 22 weighed the same: 200 divided by 22. Most real blends are uneven, so the first few are larger.
- 200 / k
The k-th ingredient can weigh at most 200 divided by k. Maca, 1st, can be up to 200 mg; gymnema, 8th, at most 25 mg; L-carnitine, 22nd, at most about 9 mg.
The most each ingredient can weigh in one 1 mL serving
- Maca≤ 200 mg
- Grape seed≤ 100 mg
- Guarana≤ 67 mg
- African mango≤ 50 mg
- Eleuthero≤ 40 mg
- Astragalus≤ 33 mg
- Green tea≤ 29 mg
- Gymnema≤ 25 mg
- Asian ginseng≤ 17 mg
- L-carnitine (22nd)≤ 9 mg
Best case, worked out from label order alone. Two servings a day doubles each figure. Chromium is separate: 0.7 mcg per serving (NIH ODS: Chromium fact sheet).
Check 2
Do the doses match what studies used?
For GlucoZen, mostly no. Chromium trials used 200-1,000 mcg a day, while two servings of GlucoZen give 1.4 mcg (NIH ODS: Chromium fact sheet). The blend ingredients fall short of research doses too, even in the best case.
| Ingredient | GlucoZen per day (best case) | Amount used in research |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium | 1.4 mcg (printed) | 200-1,000 mcg a day (NIH ODS: Chromium fact sheet) |
| African mango | At most 100 mg | 300 mg a day (NIH ODS: Weight-loss supplements (African mango, raspberry ketone, forskolin)) |
| Gymnema | At most 50 mg | About 300-500 mg (LiverTox: Gymnema) |
| Coleus forskohlii | At most about 44 mg | 500 mg a day (NIH ODS: Weight-loss supplements (African mango, raspberry ketone, forskolin)) |
| L-carnitine | At most about 18 mg | 1.8-4 g a day (NIH ODS: Weight-loss supplements (guarana/caffeine, capsaicin, L-carnitine)) |

Check 3
Does the label match the marketing?
For GlucoZen, not fully. A brand info page and graphic list Okinawa honey, berberine HCl, cinnamon bark, resveratrol, turmeric and two probiotics. None of them appear on the bottle label.
The same page suggests about five drops once daily. The label says 1 mL twice daily. When the two disagree, trust the Supplement Facts on the bottle you receive.
Our label vs marketing comparison lays out each difference.

What are the red flags of a diabetes supplement scam?
The biggest red flag is any claim to treat, reverse or replace diabetes care. FDA lists six tip-offs to health fraud, from one-product-fixes-all promises to quick fixes (FDA: 6 tip-offs to health fraud).
Disease claims
FDA warned 15 companies that selling diabetes treatments without FDA review breaks federal law (FDA: Illegally sold diabetes treatments).
Six fraud tip-offs
A product that does it all, testimonials, quick fixes, "all natural" remedies, breakthrough promises and conspiracy talk.
Hidden drugs
FDA notes some "all natural" products have contained hidden prescription drugs.
Claims without trials
FTC says health claims generally need randomized, controlled human trials (FTC: Health Products Compliance Guidance).
Borrowed authority
The ADA finds insufficient evidence for routine use of herbal supplements for blood sugar.
"Stop your meds"
NCCIH says never replace diabetes treatment with an unproven product (NCCIH: Diabetes and dietary supplements).
Check 5
How can you tell if supplement reviews are fake?
Watch for a burst of reviews in a short time and reviewers who posted only once. The FTC also suggests checking several sources, including impartial expert reviews (FTC: How to evaluate online reviews).
Since August 14, 2024, an FTC rule bans fake or AI-generated reviews and paid positive reviews. It also bans company-run "independent" review sites (FTC: Final rule banning fake reviews).
We publish no GlucoZen star score, review count or customer quote until reviews can be verified. Our reviews page explains why.

How does GlucoZen score on this checklist?
GlucoZen passes on honest disease wording and a full ingredient list, and falls short on dose disclosure and research amounts. The table scores each check plainly.
| Check | Result | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Doses on the label | Partial | Chromium is printed; the 22 blend ingredients share 200 mg with no single amounts. |
| Research-level amounts | Falls short | Each ingredient with a known research dose sits below it, even at best case. |
| Label matches ads | Falls short | The brand graphic lists ingredients and a dose not found on the bottle. |
| No disease claims on the bottle | Passes | The label says "Blood Sugar Support" and carries the FDA disease statement. |
| Verifiable reviews | Not yet | No verified reviews are on file, so none are shown. |
In its favor

- Marketing that lists a different formula
- No published trial of the product
FAQ
Choosing a blood sugar supplement FAQ
What is the best supplement for blood sugar?
No supplement is recommended for blood sugar benefit by the American Diabetes Association, which finds insufficient evidence for routine herbal or micronutrient use. If you still want one, choose a product with printed doses near research amounts, and ask your doctor first.
Is a proprietary blend bad in a supplement?
It is legal but less transparent. FDA lets a blend list only its total weight and the order of ingredients by weight. You cannot see each dose, so you cannot compare it with research. GlucoZen's 200 mg blend of 22 ingredients works this way.
Does the FDA approve blood sugar supplements?
No. FDA does not have the authority to approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before sale. A product that calls itself a diabetes treatment without FDA review may break federal law; FDA has warned 15 companies over this.
How do I know if a diabetes supplement is a scam?
Be wary of any promise to undo diabetes, replace medicine or work fast. FDA's six health-fraud tip-offs include testimonials, quick fixes, breakthrough promises and "all natural" remedies. Check the label against the ads, and ask a pharmacist before buying.
Does GlucoZen have enough chromium to work?
GlucoZen has 0.7 mcg of chromium per serving, or 1.4 mcg a day at two servings. Chromium trials used 200-1,000 mcg a day, and even those found only slight changes of unclear meaning, per NIH. The amount in GlucoZen is far below research doses.
Can I trust supplement reviews online?
Treat them with care. The FTC banned fake and paid reviews in a rule dated August 14, 2024, yet bad reviews still appear. Look across several sources, watch for bursts of reviews, and favor impartial expert reviews over testimonials.
