Cinnamon and Blood Sugar: What the Research Shows and Why It Is Not on the GlucoZen Label

Quick answer

NCCIH says research does not clearly show that cinnamon helps diabetes, and it is unclear whether cinnamon supplements help blood sugar (NCCIH: Cinnamon). Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which may harm sensitive people. GlucoZen marketing mentions cinnamon bark, resveratrol and Akkermansia, but none of the three appear on the bottle's Supplement Facts panel.

Cinnamon

Does cinnamon help blood sugar?

The evidence is unclear. NCCIH, part of the National Institutes of Health, says research does not clearly show that cinnamon helps diabetes (NCCIH: Cinnamon). It also says it is unclear whether cinnamon supplements help blood sugar at all.

That may surprise people who have seen cinnamon promoted for years. Popularity and proof are different things. A spice can be pleasant, safe in food and still lack solid evidence for a health effect.

None of that makes cinnamon bad. A sprinkle on oatmeal is a normal part of many diets. The open question is whether a supplement does anything useful for blood sugar, and so far the answer is "not shown."

Safety

What is coumarin, and who should be careful with cassia cinnamon?

Coumarin is a natural compound found in cassia cinnamon, one common type of the spice. NCCIH notes that coumarin may harm sensitive people, such as those with liver disease (NCCIH: Cinnamon).

Liver disease and cinnamon supplements

If you have a liver condition, ask your doctor before taking any concentrated cinnamon product. Food amounts and supplement amounts are not the same thing.

A label that only says cinnamon may not tell you which type is inside. If it matters for your health, ask the maker before you buy.

The label gap

Is cinnamon in GlucoZen?

Not according to the bottle. The GlucoZen label lists chromium and a 200 mg blend of 22 ingredients per 1 mL, and cinnamon is not one of them. Yet the brand info page at glucoszen.com and its "Inside GlucoZen" graphic both mention cinnamon bark.

The graphic also names Okinawa honey, berberine HCl, resveratrol, turmeric and Bifidobacterium breve. The info page adds Akkermansia muciniphila. It describes a different routine too: about five drops in warm water before breakfast, once a day.

The bottle says something else. Its directions read: "Adults, take 1 mL (approximately 2 droppers full) twice daily or as directed by a healthcare professional."

We follow the label, and we suggest you do the same. Check the Supplement Facts panel on the bottle you receive.

Side by side

Which marketed ingredients are actually on the GlucoZen label?

None of the seven named in the marketing appear on the bottle label. The table sets each one against the label and what the research says.

Ingredients named in GlucoZen marketing, checked against the bottle label and public research summaries
Marketed ingredientOn the bottle label? What the research says
Cinnamon barkNoNot clearly shown to help diabetes; cassia has coumarin (NCCIH: Cinnamon)
ResveratrolNoMixed diabetes results; Cochrane found the evidence insufficient (MSKCC: Resveratrol)
Akkermansia muciniphilaNoOne small exploratory pilot of a pasteurized form (Nature Medicine: Akkermansia pilot trial)
Berberine HClNoModest effect in type 2 diabetes; evidence limited (NCCIH: In the News - Berberine)
TurmericNoNot enough evidence of benefit for any condition (NCCIH: Turmeric)
Okinawa honeyNoNot published
Bifidobacterium breveNoNot published

Berberine has its own write-up in berberine: what the research shows.

Resveratrol

What does research say about resveratrol and diabetes?

Results are mixed. Memorial Sloan Kettering notes that a Cochrane review found insufficient evidence that resveratrol helps diabetes (MSKCC: Resveratrol).

It also comes with cautions at higher doses. Intakes of 2.5 to 5 grams a day have caused stomach upset. Resveratrol may raise bleeding risk with warfarin, and 1 gram a day inhibited three CYP enzymes (3A4, 2D6 and 2C9) (MSKCC: Resveratrol). Anyone on a blood thinner should ask a doctor before trying it.

Akkermansia

What is Akkermansia, and is there proof it helps blood sugar?

Akkermansia muciniphila is a gut bacterium. The best-known human study was a small pilot, not proof. It enrolled 40 adults with overweight or obesity at one center, and 32 finished the three months (Nature Medicine: Akkermansia pilot trial).

  • The helpful signal came from a pasteurized form, given at about 10 billion bacteria a day.
  • Insulin sensitivity improved by about 28.6% compared with placebo.
  • The authors called it exploratory. It was not a blood sugar trial in people with diabetes.

A pilot like this is where research starts. It is not a reason to buy a product, especially one whose label does not list the bacterium.

On the bottle

What is in GlucoZen instead?

Per 1 mL, the label lists 0.7 mcg of chromium and a 200 mg proprietary blend. Maca, grape seed, guarana and African mango lead the blend's 22 ingredients. Because amounts are not given, each one can weigh at most 200 divided by its place in the list (FDA Labeling Guide Ch. IV: proprietary blends).

  1. 200 mg

The whole proprietary blend in 1 mL. The label lists 22 ingredients, heaviest first, with no single amounts (FDA Labeling Guide Ch. IV: proprietary blends).

  2. about 9 mg

The average share if all 22 weighed the same: 200 divided by 22. Most real blends are uneven, so the first few are larger.

  3. 200 / k

The k-th ingredient can weigh at most 200 divided by k. Maca, 1st, can be up to 200 mg; gymnema, 8th, at most 25 mg; L-carnitine, 22nd, at most about 9 mg.

The most each ingredient can weigh in one 1 mL serving

  • Maca≤ 200 mg
  • Grape seed≤ 100 mg
  • Guarana≤ 67 mg
  • African mango≤ 50 mg
  • Eleuthero≤ 40 mg
  • Astragalus≤ 33 mg
  • Green tea≤ 29 mg
  • Gymnema≤ 25 mg
  • Asian ginseng≤ 17 mg
  • L-carnitine (22nd)≤ 9 mg

Best case, worked out from label order alone. Two servings a day doubles each figure. Chromium is separate: 0.7 mcg per serving (NIH ODS: Chromium fact sheet).

Our ingredient guide covers each profiled herb. Gymnema and Asian ginseng in the blend may lower blood sugar (LiverTox: Gymnema) (NCCIH: Asian ginseng), so check with your doctor first if you take diabetes medicine.

Next steps

What should you do if you want cinnamon for blood sugar?

Talk to your doctor first, and keep cinnamon as a food rather than a fix. NCCIH says it is very important not to replace medical treatment for diabetes with an unproven product (NCCIH: Diabetes and dietary supplements).

  1. Bring every supplement you take to your next visit, bottle in hand.
  2. Ask whether cassia cinnamon is a concern for your liver.
  3. Compare what the ad says with what the label lists before you buy anything.
  4. If a product's marketing and label disagree, trust the label and ask the seller why.

GlucoZen deserves fair credit here: its label is complete enough to show that cinnamon is missing. The full story of that gap sits on our label vs marketing page.

FAQ

Cinnamon and blood sugar questions

Does cinnamon lower blood sugar?

Research does not clearly show it, NCCIH says. It is unclear whether cinnamon supplements help blood sugar, and research has not clearly shown that cinnamon helps diabetes. Enjoy it as a spice, but do not count on it as a treatment or swap it for prescribed care.

Is cassia cinnamon safe?

Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which NCCIH says may harm sensitive people, such as those with liver disease. Normal food amounts are part of many diets. If you have a liver condition, ask your doctor before using a concentrated cinnamon supplement.

Does GlucoZen contain cinnamon?

The GlucoZen bottle label does not list cinnamon. Its Supplement Facts show 0.7 mcg of chromium and a 200 mg blend of 22 other ingredients per 1 mL. Cinnamon bark appears only in brand marketing, so check the label on the bottle you receive.

Why does GlucoZen marketing list different ingredients?

The brand info page and a brand graphic name cinnamon bark, berberine, resveratrol, turmeric, Akkermansia and others that are not on the bottle. No public explanation has been published. We follow the label and suggest asking GlucoZen support about the difference.

Does resveratrol help with diabetes?

The evidence is weak. Memorial Sloan Kettering reports mixed diabetes results and a Cochrane review that found insufficient evidence. Resveratrol may raise bleeding risk with warfarin and has caused stomach upset at 2.5 to 5 grams a day. It is not on the GlucoZen label.

Is Akkermansia proven for blood sugar?

No. The main human study was a three-month pilot with 40 people enrolled and 32 finishing. A pasteurized form improved insulin sensitivity by about 28.6% compared with placebo, but it was exploratory and did not test people with diabetes. GlucoZen's label does not list it.

Can I take cinnamon with diabetes medicine?

Ask your doctor before adding a cinnamon supplement to any diabetes plan. NCCIH stresses that an unproven product should never replace medical treatment for diabetes. Never change your medicine on your own because of a spice or supplement.
