Chromium and Blood Sugar: What 58 Trials Found and How GlucoZen Compares

Quick answer

A 2019 review of 58 trials found chromium caused only slight drops in fasting glucose and HbA1c, of unclear clinical value (NIH ODS: Chromium fact sheet). Those trials used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day. GlucoZen gives 0.7 mcg per 1 mL, or 1.4 mcg a day at the label dose. The ADA does not recommend chromium for blood sugar.

The GlucoZen label laid flat, with the Supplement Facts panel showing chromium 0.7 mcg (2% DV) as chromium picolinate
The GlucoZen label. Chromium is the only ingredient with its own printed amount: 0.7 mcg per 1 mL serving, 2% of the Daily Value.

The basics

What is chromium, and how much is in GlucoZen?

Chromium is a trace mineral, which means the body needs only tiny amounts. GlucoZen lists it as 0.7 mcg per 1 mL serving, as chromium picolinate, which is 2% of the Daily Value.

It is the only GlucoZen ingredient with its own printed amount. The other 22 share an undisclosed split of a 200 mg blend. That makes chromium the easiest part of the formula to check against research.

At the label dose of 1 mL twice a day, you get 1.4 mcg of chromium daily. Keep that number in mind. Every comparison below comes back to it. Our chromium ingredient profile has the short version.

Daily intake

How much chromium do adults need each day?

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets the Adequate Intake at 35 mcg a day for men aged 19 to 50 and 25 mcg for women of the same age (NIH ODS: Chromium fact sheet). The Daily Value on labels is 35 mcg.

Percentages are worked out from the label and the NIH figures. The Adequate Intake is a total daily need, not a dose for supplements to hit.

The big review

What did the 2019 review of 58 chromium trials find?

It found slight drops in fasting glucose and HbA1c, and the clinical meaning of those drops was unclear (NIH ODS: Chromium fact sheet). That is the largest body of chromium research the NIH fact sheet describes.

Two terms help here. Fasting glucose is your blood sugar after a night without food. HbA1c, often called A1C, reflects average blood sugar over about three months. An A1C below 5.7% is normal, 5.7% to 6.4% points to prediabetes, and 6.5% or more points to diabetes (NIDDK: The A1C test).

"Unclear clinical significance" means the numbers moved, but perhaps not enough to change how a person feels or how a doctor would treat them. A small change on paper is not the same as a meaningful change in health. Our A1C numbers guide explains what moves the test.

More evidence

Do other chromium studies show a benefit?

Not clearly. A 24-week trial in 137 adults found no effect from chromium (NIH ODS: Chromium fact sheet).

NCCIH reviewed chromium separately and counted 16 studies with 868 people. It called the evidence limited (NCCIH: Diabetes and dietary supplements). It also gave a firm reminder: never replace medical treatment for diabetes with an unproven health product.

58

Trials in the 2019 review

Slight drops in fasting glucose and HbA1c, of unclear clinical value.

137

Adults in a 24-week trial

No effect from chromium over about six months.

16

Dose check

How does the chromium in GlucoZen compare with trial doses?

It is far smaller. Trials typically used 200 to 1,000 mcg of chromium a day (NIH ODS: Chromium fact sheet). GlucoZen gives 1.4 mcg a day, so even the lowest trial dose is about 143 times larger.

The bars below put the label dose next to the low end of research for the profiled GlucoZen ingredients. Chromium is the only one with an exact printed amount. The others show the most they could weigh.

Each "Per day" bar uses the best case the label allows at 1 mL twice a day, drawn to scale against the low end of the research amount. Real amounts are likely lower. Studies tested each ingredient alone, not GlucoZen. Chromium is in micrograms; the rest in milligrams.

You would need about 143 servings to reach 200 mcg, more than two full bottles. Do not try that. The label says not to exceed the recommended dose, and no trial tested GlucoZen itself.

ADA

Does the American Diabetes Association recommend chromium?

No. Recommendation 5.16 in the ADA Standards of Care 2026 says micronutrient supplements such as chromium are not recommended for glycemic benefits (ADA Standards of Care 2026, Sec. 5).

That guidance was published December 8, 2025. It applies to chromium at any dose, including the far higher amounts used in trials.

A fair view

Is there anything good about the chromium in GlucoZen?

Yes, a few things. The amount is printed clearly, which many blends do not do. At 1.4 mcg a day, side effects from the chromium are unlikely.

Fair points

  • Exact amount and form on the label
  • Two servings give 4% of the Daily Value, a modest amount
  • Easy to compare with NIH numbers

Limits

  • About 1/143 of the lowest trial dose
  • Even full trial doses showed only slight effects
  • ADA does not recommend chromium for blood sugar

So the chromium in GlucoZen is honest on the label but unlikely to matter for blood sugar. Weigh it that way.

For buyers

What should you do with this chromium research?

Use it to set fair expectations, then talk with your care team. Chromium research does not support relying on a supplement for blood sugar.

  1. Check the panel

Confirm 0.7 mcg per 1 mL on your bottle. The Supplement Facts guide reads every line.

  2. Keep your plan

Stay on any medicine and testing schedule your doctor set. Bring the label to your next visit.

  3. Ask the right question

If you want chromium for its own sake, ask your doctor whether you need a supplement at all.

FAQ

Chromium and GlucoZen FAQ

How much chromium is in GlucoZen?

Each 1 mL serving has 0.7 mcg of chromium as chromium picolinate, which is 2% of the Daily Value. At the label dose of 1 mL twice a day, that is 1.4 mcg a day, or 4% of the 35 mcg Daily Value.

Does chromium lower A1C?

Only slightly, if at all. A 2019 review of 58 trials found slight drops in fasting glucose and HbA1c of unclear clinical significance, and a 24-week trial in 137 adults found no effect. Those trials used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day.

What chromium dose was used in studies?

Chromium trials typically used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day, according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. GlucoZen gives 1.4 mcg a day, so the lowest trial dose is about 143 times larger than the GlucoZen daily amount.

How much chromium do adults need per day?

The Adequate Intake is 35 mcg a day for men aged 19 to 50 and 25 mcg for women of the same age, per NIH. The Daily Value used on supplement labels is 35 mcg.

Does the ADA recommend chromium for diabetes?

No. ADA Standards of Care 2026, recommendation 5.16, says micronutrient supplements such as chromium or magnesium are not recommended for glycemic benefits. Talk to your doctor before adding any supplement to diabetes care.

Is chromium picolinate safe at the GlucoZen dose?

At 1.4 mcg a day, side effects from the chromium itself are unlikely, since it is well below the Daily Value. The rest of the formula has its own cautions, so ask your doctor first if you take medicine or have a health condition.

Should I take extra GlucoZen to get more chromium?

No. The label says do not exceed the recommended dose of 1 mL twice daily. Reaching even 200 mcg of chromium would take about 143 servings, and no study has tested GlucoZen at any dose.
